Taking Steps to Create a Peaceful Home

It was a few days before Christmas and I was sitting around with the gals on my MOPS team. We were sharing either something good happening in our lives, or something that could use some improvement. A few gals spoke and my heart beat in my chest, knowing what needs improvement in my life. It was the atmosphere in our home— you know when things just seem off? That was us.

So, I shared about how things were just too chaotic in our house and how everyone was a little un-kind and sort of dysfunctional. Thankfully, since that night, things have gotten better and it’s not by chance either. As Moms, we can sense when things are off in our family and also, we usually know how to get back on track.

Here’s what I did to create more peace in our home. If you’re like me and you’re craving kinder words, better attitudes and a happier family, here are some ideas for you

Make sure everyone is getting enough sleep. Yes, this seems basic, but it’s HUGE. Sleep deprived children (and adults!) are grumpy and truthfully don’t even act like themselves. Get your sleep figured out and boom—better behavior will follow. Remember, this is just as much for you as it is for them. Parents need sleep to be kind and do life well!

•Do what’s most important to you first in the day. I was having guilt that reading with the kids was being left until the end of the day, when they were really tired. So, we started doing their out loud reading together first thing in the morning and wow, it’s become one of my favorite parts of the day. We snuggle up with blankets and I have my coffee, while they get their reading done. I’m happy because I know that no matter what we do that evening, reading is done.  What’s hanging over your head, causing you guilt? Take care of it first thing in the morning. Peace of mind will thank you.

Get out of the house with your family. Sometimes everyone just needs to get out and do something different. Last Sunday, we went swimming as a family and when we came home, everyone was in such a good mood! Do something that gives everyone get a little exercise. Here are 15 NW Washington Hikes that are 3 Miles Long or Less and here are some fun day trip ideas

Have a family chore party. Ok, to be completely honest, I get so grouchy when I feel like all the responsibilities at home fall on me. As things pile up, I become bitter and pretty rude with everyone in my family. While Moms shouldn’t get nasty with their people, they also shouldn’t have to do everything either. So make a plan and pull everyone on board. Work hard together. It’s important for our kids to have responsibilities and participate and it creates peace in the home.

Lead by example. What feeds your soul? Let your kids see you doing those things. Play music that’s uplifting and talk about how important kindness is. But mostly, model it. Smile even when you don’t feel like it and watch their faces reflect yours. Mothering a crazy huge responsibility, but we were created to do it….and do it well.

Family is not an important thing. It’s everything. -Michael J. Fox
