One of the best parts of running NW Healthy Mama, is sharing fun things to do and then hearing success stories from you guys! Everytime I get a sweet message about a hike you did, a restaurant you tried or an event you went to, it is so thrilling. Our area is so full of healthy family fun and NOW is the time to get out and enjoy it! Today is for the bikers, the wanna-be bikers and everyone in between. Get ready for some awesome trail ideas!

With spring in full swing, it’s time for a new adventure. Did you know Kent is the fasting growing city in Washington state? Kent is investing in cycling infrastructure that offers something for everyone—from seasoned cyclers, to carefree cruisers and the training-wheel set. At its core is the scenic, user-friendly Kent Valley Loop Trails (KVLT) system. The KVLT system consists of five multi-use trail loops connecting more than 30 miles of biking fun. The loops are mostly off right-of-way, paved and feature level surfaces, vibrant way-finding and location markers, fantastic views of Mount Rainier and the Green River valley, and connections to several parks, downtown, Airways Brewing and attractions.

The KVLT system is designed to maximize ease of use (way finding is conveniently marked using a color and animal for each loop, such as “red salmon”), safety (half-mile intervals include marked coordinates to aid emergency response if needed) and connectedness (the Kent Regional Trails Connector will open in mid-May and complete the connection of two popular regional trails, the Interurban and Green River).

Each distinct loop offers riders a unique experience and varying distances:

  • Rabbit (short): this 1.6-mile excursion offers scenic views along the banks of the Green River
  • Heron (short): if you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of this loops namesake looking for a snack along this 4.5-mile route
  • Frog (medium–opening Summer 2017): this 9-mile loop allows cyclists to experience the serenity of the Green River trail and the urban appeal of the Interurban trail. Riders in need of a break will find an array of options at Alki Bakery
  • Salmon (long): this 13-mile loop features views of agricultural fields, parks and golf courses that offer places to rest and enjoy the scenery
  • Eagle (long): Soaring through it all, the 13-mile Eagle Loop treats riders to a view of Mt. Rainier that’s not to be missed. Riders seeking to extend the experience can incorporate a connection which provides an easy stop at Macrina Bakery for coffee and freshly baked goods

Cyclists looking for an adrenaline rush can enjoy a new BMX pump track at Briscoe Park opening this fall.
